FAMILY Companion

90% of our customers are looking for a family pet. An affectionate and loyal member of their "pack." I have always bred intelligent bulldogs, a smart animal can and will assess the situation and not overreact.

Personal PROTECTION

Our bulldogs tend to have stable temperaments, confidence, high prey and defensive drive making them excellent protection bulldogs. I do not do personal protection myself, though I will "test" my stock, now and again. Taking an untrained AB and have a professional handler "attack" us to see the bulldog's reaction.

CATCH DOG

Catching is what makes a bulldog a bulldog, but today the need to catch, in most cases is irrelevant. That being said, I appreciate the nerve, agility and stamina of any bulldog able to catch. Pictured to your left is my buddy Mr. Cook. He drove up from Louisiana to purchase Frosty. When he told me he planned on using him to catch wild hogs, I threw in Katz. She had so much prey drive that keeping her in a kennel was actually cruel, I knew she would thrive in the swamps and enjoy catching hogs. Both Frosty and Katz are excellent catch dogs, Mr. Cook's uncle, who now owns the pair claims "they are rough catchdogs with a bite like Godzilla!"

HEALTH

The American Bulldog has and continues to be riddled with genetic defects, too many to list. We cross our fingers every time we outcross, because we simply don't know what is in the lines. We still have issues here and there but work diligently to correct and remove any flaws from our stock. We have PennHIPP'ed four of our bulldogs several years ago, 3 were in the top 10% and one was average, 50%. Which was expected, since she came from an outcross of gamey AB's bred for prey/ defensive drive over all other attributes.

Conformation

External structure and appearance are not a priority for a "working" breed, however I have always had a "type" that I strive to produce consistently, that includes short backs, massive hindquarters, thick necks, powerful bite and a broad head.

31 YEARS Experience

First pic was in 1995, the second pic from 2018. People tend to hold on to the old AB's thinking they were better. The fact is they were not. Most were riddled with genetic defects. Why? Defects are not a priority for a "working" breed, as long as the bulldog can protect or catch, nothing else matters. Because of that type of thinking, it took me well over 15 years just to identify and weed out the most prevalent genetic defects. Aspenrare Kennel has been using the same bloodline for over 12 generations.
